The European Commission’s decision on Apple’s steering practices under the Digital Markets Act is another important step in the regulatory reshaping of Apple’s role in payments.
The Commission reaffirmed that app developers must be free to direct users to alternative payment solutions outside Apple’s In-App Purchase system. This limits Apple’s ability to control or restrict the payment options available within its ecosystem.
The approach is consistent with the Commission’s earlier intervention requiring Apple to provide competing mobile wallets with access to the iPhone’s NFC functionality for in-store payments.
