EU Decision on Apple’s DMA Practices

By April 4, 2025August 27th, 2025No Comments

We are witnessing a regulatory reshaping of Apple’s role in payments.

This week, the European Commission released its full decision on Apple’s steering practices under the Digital Markets Act (hashtag#DMA).

In it, the Commission reaffirms a central principle: app developers must be free to use alternative payment solutions to Apple’s In-App Purchase (IAP).

In other words, Apple can no longer unilaterally control or restrict payment options within its ecosystem.

Just as the Commission previously required Apple to open access to the iPhone’s hashtag#NFC antenna to wallets competing with Apple Pay for physical transactions, it is now applying that same principle to in-app payments.
